Faculty Development Program On Theory of Automata
2nd - 6th July 2018
Five Days Faculty Development Program on "Theory of Automata" was organized by CSE Department, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida from 2nd - 6th July 2018. FDP was sponsored Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University under TEQIP- Phase III, Central Sector Scheme (CSS) of MHRD, Govt. of India.
FDP was inaugurated in the august presence of Dr. Abhishek Swaroop (Professor & Head-IT, BPIT, Delhi) and Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey (OSD-Campus of Open Learning, University of Delhi), Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti, (DGI Director ), Prof. B.L. Kaul, (Registrar, DGI ), Prof. Shanthi Makka (Convenor) Prof. Manoj Kumar Yadav, (Coordinator) HODs of various departments, faculty members and invited guests.
The Sponsoring University, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow aims to provide and upgrade education, training and research in field of technical education. The major objective of FDP was to develop methods by which computer scientists can describe and analyze the dynamic behavior of discrete systems. This research oriented FDP was aimed at enhancing Theoretical as well Practical knowledge of the participants in the area of Automata. 25 Faculty members from various colleges affiliated to AKTU had registered for this FDP.

After the formal inauguration, Dr. Abhishek Swaroop, who has more than 23 years of experience in the field of Distributed Algorithms, Group Mutual Exclusion, Mobile Ad-hoc Networks, Fault Tolerance and Theory of Automata made a presentation on "Theoretical Computer Science" and discussed the transformation of computers since 1980. He also highlighted the invention of Automata.
During the second session, Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey made a presentation on "Internet Of Things in relation to Automata Theory". He discussed Knowledge Management and role of IoT in day-to-day life.

Dr. Parma Nand who has earned a Ph.D. from IIT Roorkee and has research interest in Computer Graphics, Algorithm, Distributed Computing and Wireless and Sensor Networking and Theory of Automata, began with his presentation on "Regular Sets and Regular Expressions". He shared the importance of Automata in the field of Computer Science Engineering and discussed its application areas, which deal with Finite Automata. He also explained regular sets along with examples and then briefed about Chomsky Hierarchy and corresponding Machines.
During the second session on Day-2, Dr. Manoj Kumar, Associate Professor & Head of the Computer Centre at Delhi Technological University gave a brief presentation on "Cellular Automata and it's Applications". He explained its common features and described how each cell encapsulates some portion of the state of the system. Dr. Kumar also explained a project on simulator using Cellular Automata.
4th July 2018
Prof. Danish Ather, working as Associate Professor at Teerthanker Mahaveer University (TMU), began the session with a presentation on "Minimization of Finite Automata, Finite Automata with Output, Moore and Mealy Machine and Pumping Lemma for Regular Languages". He explained construction of Finite Automata citing examples and then demonstrated the process of minimization of Finite Automata. He also explained practical examples of minimization process and Moore and Mealy Machine Construction Process. Prof. Ather also demonstrated the Pumping Lemma for Regular Languages with multiple examples.
Dr. Arvind Kumar, Associate Professor at Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET), Ghaziabad began the second session of the day with a presentation on "Introduction to Grammar, Chomsky Hierarchy and Context Free Grammar". He explained the application of Languages in real life and then defined Language with respect to Automata Theory.
5th July 2018
The first session of the day was conducted by Oracle India Pvt. Ltd. Applications Developer, Ms. Nalini Srivastava. After her presentation on "Push Down Automata", Ms. Srivastava explained Deterministic Push Down Automata (DPDA) and discussed the basic difference between DPDA and NPDA with appropriate examples. She demonstrated real life examples of PDA.
Prof. Shanthi Makka, Associate Professor and HOD-CSE, Dronacharya Group of Institutions continued the session with the discussion on Construction of Push Down Automata, Conversion from PDA to CFG and vice versa.
During the post lunch session, Dr. T.V. Vijay Kumar, Professor - Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi made a presentation on "Heuristic Algorithms for NP Problems". He explained the differences between P, NP, NP-Complete and NP-Hard Problems with appropriate examples. During the session he also discussed Genetic Algorithms and Swam Technology.
6th July 2018
Dr. Manoj Kumar, Associate Professor & Head of the Computer Centre at Delhi Technological University, conducted the session on "Applications of Finite Automata". He cited examples of switching theory, vending machines and automatic bill generating vending machines which make use of Automata. He also explained how Automata is used for weather forecasting. Dr. Kumar ended his session with a discussion on encoding of Turing Machine using binary format 0's and 1's.
During the post lunch session, Prof. Shanthi Makka conducted a Lab session on JFLAP-Java Formal Languages & Automata Package. She explained how to install JFLAP. Participants had hands on experience in construction of DFA, NFA, and conversion from NFA-DFA, FA-Grammar and Construction of Regular expression from DFA.
The FDP concluded with the Feedback and Felicitation Ceremony. Participants were awarded with the certificates by Prof. Ashish Soti and Prof. B.L. Kaul.
Mr. Manoj Kumar Yadav extended the Vote of Thanks. He expressed his gratitude to the DGI Management, Prof. Ashish Soti, Prof. B.L.Kaul, Prof. Shanthi Makka, HODs and the members of organizing committee. He thanked the participants for their sincerity and support which made the FDP a successful learning experience for them.
