India’s largest Student Innovation Challenge
About Smart India Hackathon
Smart India Hackathon (SIH) is the largest open platform in the world for tomorrow’s innovators and entrepreneurs to start working towards a smarter India now. SIH is India’s largest open innovation model where students solve real-world problems for government ministries, industries, and society. It is jointly organized by the Ministry of Education's Innovation Cell and the All India Council for Technical Education. Since its launch in 2017, the program has grown into one of the largest open innovation platforms for students, promoting creativity, teamwork, and practical problem-solving that combine emerging technologies with real societal needs.
The hackathon is conducted in multiple stages. It begins with internal institute-level competitions where students present their ideas. Selected teams move forward to national-level evaluations and eventually compete in the grand finale, where the teams develop and demonstrate working prototypes within an intensive hackathon environment. Solutions are evaluated based on innovation, feasibility, scalability, and potential social impact.
SIH includes both software and hardware editions, enabling students to work on diverse technological challenges across several domains. These domains typically include agriculture, healthcare, smart technologies, environmental sustainability, education, and public service innovation.
Over the years, the Smart India Hackathon has become an important pillar in India’s innovation ecosystem. It supports national initiatives such as Digital India and Startup India, encouraging young innovators to translate ideas into practical solutions and entrepreneurial ventures. The platform also promotes collaboration between academia, industry, and government agencies, helping students gain exposure to real-world challenges and industry mentorship.
