Industrial Visit to Daikin-Zomato Cold Storage Facility, Delhi

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida, organized an industrial visit to the Daikin-Zomato Cold Storage Facility, Mundka Industrial Area, Delhi, on 25th August 2026. The visit was organized to provide students with practical exposure to industrial refrigeration, cold-storage operations, temperature-controlled logistics, and HVAC&R systems. Studentsfrom B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering), III Year, participated in the visit under the supervision of Dr. Shailesh Kumar Singh, (HOD, Mechanical Engineering) and Mr. Ankur Sachdeva, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering and ASHRAE Faculty Advisor.
The visit provided students with an opportunity to understand the practical working of a large-scale cold-storage facility and the application of refrigeration and air-conditioning principles in industrial environments. Students observed the requirements of temperature and humidity control for food and perishable products, the role of thermal insulation in minimizing heat gain, cold-chain management practices, material handling and storage systems, and industrial safety procedures.
During the visit, students were introduced to the facility's refrigeration system based on the Vapour Compression Refrigeration System (VCRS) using R-404A refrigerant. The facility comprises multiple temperature-controlled zones designed to maintain the quality of stored food products. Students learned about the functioning of Indoor Units (IDUs) as evaporator units and Outdoor Units (ODUs) as condensing units. The facility has 24 ODUs, each with a maximum capacity of 14 HP, systematically arranged and labelled, with each ODU mapped to its corresponding IDU to facilitate organized maintenance and fault identification.
The visit also provided practical insights into evaporator unit sizing, ODU configuration, copper pipe selection, pre-cooling chamber design, controlled defrost cycles, real-time monitoring, thermal insulation, and infiltration control. These observations helped students correlate their classroom learning in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Heat Transfer, Psychrometrics, and Heat Exchanger Performance with their industrial applications.
The industrial exposure enhanced students' understanding of energy-efficient refrigeration systems, temperature-controlled storage, and modern cold-chain operations. It also familiarized them with industrial practices and career opportunities in HVAC&R, refrigeration, cold-chain management, and logistics.
Overall, the visit was an informative and enriching learning experience that strengthened the students' practical understanding of refrigeration and cold-storage technologies. The industrial exposure successfully bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world engineering applications and encouraged students to explore emerging opportunities in refrigeration, HVAC&R, and cold-chain management.
