Workshop to Demonstrate Casting Process - "Cast to Create"
9th June 2025
Under the Centre of Excellence in Smart Manufacturing (CoESM), the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a hands-on workshop titled “Cast to Create.” The workshop was led by Mr. Vishnu Kuntal, with support from faculty members Dr. Deepak Kumar and Mr. Ankur Sachdeva, along with lab technicians and second-year students who have worked on foundry-based projects. First year students attended the workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the casting process from pattern making to final product finishing. The initiative was part of the department’s continuous efforts to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and practical industrial applications.
The workshop began with a motivational address by Dr. Sangeeta Mangesh (Director), who emphasized the importance of hands-on learning and highlighted the benefits students gain by actively participating in such practical sessions. Following her speech, Dr. Saket Kumar provided an insightful introduction to the history, significance and industrial applications of the casting process setting a strong theoretical foundation for the session.
Students were guided through each stage of casting, starting with the tools and materials used in pattern making including live demonstrations using wood and wax. Students then learned the mould preparation process using green sand and were involved in activities such as ramming, venting, and parting. Under the safety supervision of Mr. Naseeb (Lab Instructor), molten metal was poured into the molds allowing students to observe the pouring, cooling and solidification processes in real-time. After the components were extracted post-processing techniques such as fettling and surface finishing were demonstrated.
Students improved their understanding of material behavior, heat treatment, safety measures, and teamwork in a lab setting. Dr. Shailesh Kumar Singh (Registrar) also visited the lab, reviewed the casted components and praised the educational value of the workshop. He highlighted, “Cast to Create” was a highly beneficial initiative, strengthening students’ foundational knowledge and inspiring future engineers.
