ICT BASED SHORT TERM COURSE ON
"Sustainable Development and Natural Resource Management"
29th April to 3rd May 2019
A Short Term Course on "Sustainable Development and Natural Resource Management" was conducted by NITTTR Chandigarh during April 29th - May 3rd, 2019 with an objective to highlight some of the major issues of climate change, natural disasters, techniques and strategies for sustainable development mitigating the disasters successfully. The Course was organized at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT and was attended by Faculty across the department.
The STC started on 29th April with the introduction to the course by Dr. U.N. Roy, Head - Dept. of Rural Development, NITTTR, Chandigarh. Dr.Roy also talked about UNNAT BHARAT ABHIYAAN, a project started by MHRD, Government of India to connect all the Higher Education Institutions for rural development. The introductory session was followed by Dr. Roy's lecture on "Integrated Natural Resource Management and Sustainable Development". He talked about the resource management in various villages of Alwar where Mr.Rajendra Singh and his team restored and got the ponds recharged without the use of pumps for pumping water.
The next session was coordinated by Dr. Poonam Syal, Faculty - Dept. of Electrical Engineering, NITTTR, Chandigarh with an informative discussion on "Importance and Scope of Sustainable Development". During her lecture, she laid stress on :
- Economic Sustainability.
- Social Sustainability.
- Environmental Sustainability.
Dr. V.K. Bhatt (Head - ICAR - IISWCRC) conducted an extremely informative lecture on "Watershed Management for Sustainable Development" where he also discussed Gabions Structures.
Prof. Sanjay Sharma, Faculty - NITTTR Chandigarh delivered a lecture on "Water Pollution and Waste Water Management". During the session, Prof. Sharma highlighted the grim situation of the depleting ground water level, water scarcity and treatment of waste water. He stressed upon rain water harvesting. He further discussed various sources of water pollution and impact of polluted water on humans and livelihoods.
Prof. S C Jain, Faculty - Punjab University Chandigarh, delivered a lecture on "Air Pollution and its Control". He held detailed discussion on sustainability, resources and their classifications. Prof. Jain further discussed effects of globalization on air pollutions, processes for the control of particulate matter and control of dangerous gases in the environment.
Mr. Rakesh Rana (Scientist D), Central Ground Water Board, discussed rainwater harvesting. He also discussed designing of recharge structures based on hydrological feasibility. He primarily focused on design methods such as construction of Recharge Pit, Recharge Trench, Dug Well (for large buildings), Recharge Shaft, Shaft with recharge well and Trench with recharge well.
Dr. Pankaj Panwar, Sr. Scientist, ICAR - IISWCRC delivered an informative lecture on "Sloping Agriculture Land Technology for Resource Conservation". After the lecture, he held a discussion on characteristics of Shivalik Regions i.e., topography, rainfed agro ecosystem, rainfall etc. Dr. Panwar discussed about the watershed management programme "Sukhomajri" run by Govt. Of India.
Prof. Lini Mathew, Head - Dept. Of Electrical Engineering, NITTTR Chandigarh conducted a session on "Grid Integration of Renewable Energy Sources". During her lecture, she discussed Natural Resource Management, rainfall distribution, land holding, vegetative cover, soil fertility and crop failure.
While delivering lecture on "Renewable Energy Recourses", Er. Sujit Singh, MD, Solar Age Ltd., discussed elements of solar panel and different test conditions for solar panel i.e., STC, NOCT and its electrical characteristics. He also explained the mathematical calculation of AC loads in houses, based on load and layout of ONGRID, OFFGRID and HYBRID systems.
The last lecture of the STC was delivered by Prof. Poonam Syal on "Organic Waste Management". Dr. Syal discussed about the waste generated through different sources and processes for the decompositions and explained Vermicompost Technology. She also discussed the lifestyle and borrowing habits of earthworms.
The STC concluded on 3rd May 2019 with the Vote of Thanks proposed by the Course Coordinator, Prof. Poonam Sayal.
