Summer Workshop on Essentials of MATLAB and Simulink

16th to 19th July 2018

The Department of ECE and EEE organized the Summer Workshop on Essentials of MATLAB and Simulink at DGI, Greater Noida from 16th to 19th July 2018 in association with DGI - IEEE Student Chapter.

Day-1, 16th July 2018

The workshop was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti, Honourable Director, DGI, Prof. B. L. Kaul, Honourable Registrar, DGI and Prof. Probeer Sahw, HOD, ECE & EEE. Prof. Soti said that it is very important for engineering graduates to gain first-hand experience of working on industry standard software like MATLAB and Simulink. Prof. Kaul added that the participants must make full use of the workshop and learn the industry applications of the software.

Prof. Sahw started the first session with the introduction of the software. Then the participants went onto leverage all the functionalities of the Command Window. They also learnt how to create and use variables and arrays in MATLAB. Next, they tried their hands on creating and running .m script files in MATLAB. After practicing for a while on the basic elements of MATLAB, the participants moved onto matrix and string manipulation operations. The participants learnt how to plot various graphs like line graph, bar graph, pie chart etc. for different situations in the post lunch session. The day ended with a dedicated hands-on session for better exposure to the contents delivered throughout the day.

Day-2, 17th July 2018

The day started with the practice of few problems on the topics delivered on the previous day. The participants were then explained the conditional statements and loops. Next, Prof. Sahw demonstrated the working of switch-case vs. if-else and while loop vs. for loop using a number of examples. He then went onto explain the use of MATLAB in solving and finding roots of polynomials. In the post lunch session, he discussed about Symbolic Math Toolbox and its use in operating the symbolic variables and expressions. The day ended with the practice of the commands learnt during the day.

Day-3, 18th July 2018

The participants learnt about the basics of the graphical programming language, Simulink and simulated few electronic circuits to visualize their outputs for different inputs. The day progressed with simulation of various other electronic and electrical circuits like electric machines etc. Participants were also briefed about other toolboxes available in MATLAB and Simulink.

Day-4, 19th July 2018

The last day was dedicated to specific engineering applications of MATLAB like Fuzzy Logic and Image Processing. The participants were first introduced to the basic concepts and features of Fuzzy Logic and Image Processing. Later, the use of MATLAB for designing Fuzzy Logic based controller was demonstrated with few examples. It was followed with a discussion on basic codes and commands for Image Processing using MATLAB. The day ended with the practice session.

The participants were enthralled at the end of the workshop and said that the workshop was very useful for them. They also appreciated the extensive use of examples for clearing the concepts discussed during the workshop. Prof. Sahw appreciated the participants for being active participation throughout the workshop and expressed his gratitude to Prof. Soti, Honourable Director and Prof. Kaul, Registrar for the help extended by them in smooth conduction of the workshop.
