Summer Workshop

on

Robotics and Embedded System

9th - 14th July 2018

The Department of ECE & EEE, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida successfully organized the Six Days Summer Workshop on "Robotics and Embedded System" from 9th to 14th July 2018 at DGI campus. The workshop was conducted under the banner of e-Yantra Project, MHRD, Govt. of India in association with IIT Bombay. Mr. Amit Jain, Assistant Professor, Department of ECE was the coordinator and instructor for this workshop.

The workshop started with inspirational address by Hon'ble Director, Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti on 9th July 2018. He advised the participants to attend the workshop with full dedication and remain attentive and focused during the workshop. He motivated the students by asserting the importance of robotics in industries as well as in social life like sewage blockage removal etc. Prof. Vinod kumar, HOD, APS Dept., also encouraged the students and explained how robotics and automation have become technologies of change.

Day 1: 9th July 2018

Mr. Amit Jain began the session with the introduction of robot.  He shared that the word robot was coined by a Czech novelist Karel Capek in a 1920 play titled Rossum's Universal Robots (RUR). Robota in Czech is a word used for worker or servant. Robots can do repetitive jobs that are boring, stressful, or labour-intensive for humans. Mr. Jain than discussed the three laws of robotics and its history. He informed that the first programmable industrial robot was designed by George Devol in 1954 its name was UNIMATE, short name for Universal Automation. UNIMATE originally automated the manufacture of TV picture tubes. During the last session of the day, he discussed the basic components required for designing a robot. He later helped the participants in installing various software and drivers for practice.

Day 2: 10th July 2018

Day two started with the introduction to Firebird V platform and its types. Mr. Jain discussed about its technical specification, the sensors and actuators installed on it like sharp IR sensors, white line sensors, servo motors and geared motors. He explained how to use the Firebird V robotic research platform and its safety precautions.

In the next session Mr. Amit Jain explained Atmega 2560 microcontroller,  its ports and how to access and configure the ports as input or output. He later helped the students in solving various examples of register value and buzzer interfacing.

In the last session of the day, students wrote the C-program for buzzer interfacing.

Day 3: 11th July 2018

Day three was devoted to the study of sensors and communication methods. Students learnt about IR sensors, ultra sonic sensors, motion sensor and Gyroscope and GPS module. They came to now about the use of actuators like relay, position encoder, DC geared motors, grippers etc.

In the next session students were taught how to establish communication with the robotic kit, which may be wired communication like USB Communication and Wired RS232 (serial) communication or wireless communication like Wireless Zig-Bee Communication, Wi-Fi communication and Bluetooth communication

Day 4: 12th July 2018

On day four, Mr. Amit Jain began the session with the introduction to basic movements of robot, generating the logic table for direction control of robot. He then explained motor driver IC L293D and its interfacing with motor and microcontroller. He later made the students understand PWM signal generation in AVR for velocity control of DC geared motors

Day 5: 13th July 2018

Day five started with LCD interfacing tutorial. Students understood the control and data pins of LCD for interfacing it with the microcontroller, Atmega 2560. Students ran the LCD embedded C program and displayed their names and various strings on LCD. They also practiced motion control and velocity control embedded C program. In the last session they displayed various sensors values installed on the kit.

Day 6: 14th July 2018

On the concluding day of the training, Mr. Amit Jain explained  White Line Sensor Calibration. Students got to know the procedure of generating the logics for white as well as black line following robot and direction change robot.

In the last session students generated logics for various path following robots and made their projects.

During the Valedictory Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti and Registrar Prof. B.L Kaul, congratulated the students on successful completion of their training.

Prof. Probeer Sahw, HOD, Department of ECE & EEE appreciated the participants for their enthusiastic participation. He thanked Mr. Amit Jain for conducting the workshop.
