Industrial Visit to Doordarshan T.V. Tower, Pitampura, New Delhi

04th May, 2016

IEEE Student Chapter, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida, under the Digital India campaignorganized an Industrial visit to "Doordarshan T. V. Tower", Pitampura, New Delhi on 04th May 2016. Forty - six students & Faculty member Mr. Nitin Kumar and Ms. Shailika Sharma from EEE and ECE Department visited the site.

The objective of this industrial visit was to create awareness among the students about the basic principles of T.V. broadcastand satellite communication and other practical concepts in a transmitter station.

Doordarshan (often abbreviated DD) is autonomous, India's Central Government founded public service broadcaster, a division of Prasar Bharati. It is one of India's largest broadcasting organizations in terms of studio and transmitter infrastructure. Recently it has also started broadcasting on digital terrestrial transmitters. The DD provides television, radio, online and mobile services throughout metropolitan and regional India, as well as overseas through the Indian Network and Radio India.

Doordarshan had a modest beginning an experimental telecast starting in Delhi on 15 September 1959, with a small transmitter and a makeshift studio. The regular daily transmission started in 1965 as a part of All India Radio. National telecasts were introduced in 1982. In the same year, colour TV was introduced to India with the live telecast of theIndependence Day speech by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 15 August 1982, followed by the 1982 Asian Games held in Delhi. The Doordarshan Pitampura TV tower was built in 1988. This TV tower is a 235 - metre (771 ft) - tall television tower, with an observation deck that is located in the northwest of New Delhi, India. It is the 15th tallest structure of India. It acts as an earth station which can send and receive signals to satellites. Many satellites stationed in geostationary orbits around the earth are used for purpose of live broadcast, program broadcast and used by Doordarshan for TV and Radio broadcast. Broadcasting is process of sending information to distance place for transmitting useful information to the general public. Means of broadcasting in India is Terrestrial, Satellite and Internet. Both AIR (All India Radio) and DD (Doordarshan) make use of Terrestrial & Satellite for broadcasting.

At Doordarshan Kendra, students and faculties were received by Doordarshan team members, who explained the students about the team operation carried out at Doordarshan T.V tower. In Doordarshan Kendra , Students visited the entire studio like control room, music studio, playback studio, talks studio, Transmitter Section and recording room. Doordarshan team members explained to the students the concept of broadcasting and said Pitampura T V tower receives high frequency C band signal from the satellite which was first converted into L band to reduce losses during transfer of signal from received to transmitter. The audio and video signal is separately modulated into FM and AM signal and before transmission both signals are merged together to form a single channel.

During this visit, students got an opportunity to know the technical details of Satellite Coverage, broadcasting of the TV Channels, broadcasting techniques, ground transmitters ,sound controller ,video controller, transmission through TV tower etc.

The Industrial visit to "DOORDARSHAN TV TOWER" was like a feast to student's mind and eyes both as they had opportunity to explore the new roads and hills that took them to new path of knowledge. The trip was exceptionally good & knowledgeable for all students.
