Panel Discussion: The Role of Mentorship and Peer Learning in Skill Development

Localization- Theory and Practice

1st April 2025

IEEE student Chapter, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a hands on session on “Array Signal Processing for Acoustic & Brain Source Localization- Theory and Practice”was conducted on 1stApril, 2025 at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida under the supervision ofProf. Sanghamitra V Arora, RDC Head. Dr. Lalan Kumar (Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering in IIT Delhi) was the resource person of the session.

The objective of a hands-on session on “Array Signal Processing for Acoustic & Brain Source Localization – Theory and Practice” was to provide participants with both theoretical understanding and practical experience in array signal processing techniques used for localizing acoustic and brain sources.

Prof. ( Dr.) Arpita Gupta ( Director, DGI) formally commenced the session by extending a warm welcome to Dr. Lalan Kumar and presented him with a sapling as a symbol of respect and gratitude. She highlighted his significant contributions to the field of Electrical Engineering.

Dr. LalanKumar started the session by introducing the fundamental concepts of array signal processing, emphasizing its interdisciplinary relevance in fields such as biomedical engineering, neuroscience, sonar, radar, and audio technologies. He elaborated on how sensor arrays can be employed to detect, localize, and track multiple sources of signals, and how such technologies are increasingly being applied in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and auditory scene analysis.

The theoretical framework was meticulously explained, covering crucial topics such as beamforming, direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, and spatial filtering. Following the theoretical session, participants were introduced to hands on session.Thepractical implementation of signal processing techniques in MATLAB/Python is provided, with tasks, simulating sound source localization in a room, and applying beam forming to EEG data. The session also covers case studies and real-world applications, such as smart home devices, surveillance systems, robotic auditory systems, and brain-computer interfaces.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the IEEE Student Chapter coordinators, acknowledging Dr. Lalan Kumar for his enriching session. The hands-on session not only enhanced the technical knowledge of students but also inspired them to explore further research and innovation in the domain of signal processing and its multifaceted applications.
