Visit to Sewage Treatment Plant, Govindpuram (Ghaziabad)
24th August, 2018
Department of Civil Engineering, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a visit to Sewage Treatment Plant (Ghaziabad Development Authority), Govindpuram, Ghaziabad on 24th August, 2018. Civil Engineering students of 3rd & 4th Year along with the faculty members Mr. Sanjit Shrivastava and Ms. Swati Verma, Assistant Professors, visited the plant.
The objective of sewage treatment plant visit was to make the students aware about various techniques and processes carried out during treatment of waste water.
Students reached the site at 12:30 PM and were welcomed by Mr. Vivek Tyagi,Engineer-Incharge of the plant.
Mr. Tyagi briefed the students about the process followed in treating the waste water. He explained the treatment process of removing contaminants from the waste water and produce treated water which is safe to be dumped into the rivers and canals.
Mr. Tyagi said that the primary treatment system consists of 3 stages of screening in which one of them is manual and rest is automatic. Screening removes objects such as rags, paper, plastics and metals and thus prevent damage and clogging of downstream equipment, piping etc. Sewage than flows into the sedimentation tank where heavier particles settle down. It finally goes into the aeration tank where dissolved oxygen (DO) level is maintained.
Explaining the further treatment, Mr. Tyagi demonstrated how partially treated water is then flown into the chlorination tank for chlorination. He said that the sewage treatment plant treats 56 million liters of water per day.
The visit helped students understand the operation process, maintenance cost and usage of treated water. Overall, the visit to Sewage Treatment Plant was very informative for both students and mentors as they learnt the basics of water treatment.
