One Week ISTE STTP for Coordinators workshop on Environmental Studies

ISTE Coordinators Workshop On Environmental Studies under the National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India) was conducted by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay during 23rd to 27th March 2015.Dr. Abhishek Swami, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities attended the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to train faculty coordinators from various educational institutions across the country for organizing the main STTTP workshop in their respective institutions scheduled during 02nd June to 12th June 2015.
On 23rd March 2015, inaugural session began with the informative speech of Prof. Deepak B. Phatak, Principal Investigator, National Mission on Education through ICT (MHRD, Govt. of India) IIT Bombay. Prof. Phatakdiscussed various methodologies adopted for enhancing engineering education. He also explained the various current environment issues and their impact on social aspects of the nation. After the inaugural session, Prof. Virendra Sethi,Coordinator ISTE STTP highlighted various aspects of air pollution and their abatement. Prof. Maya Mahajan,Associate Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham focused on the role of sustainable development for the development of the country.
Prof. Nikhil K Kothurkar, Associate Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham discussed various social and political aspects of sustainable development. Prof. Nikhil suggested ways to run industries in a sustainable manner so that a harmonious balance can be maintained between development and environment.
On 24th March 2015, the session began with a presentation on Water Management by Mr. Munish Chandel, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay. Mr. Munish discussed various water resources and the right policies for conservation of these resources. Prof. Prof. D. Parthasarathy, Head of the Department of Social Studies, IIT Bombay discussed various social issues such as water scarcity and fluoride problem in drinking water. Prof. D. Parthasarathy emphasized on the need of individual participation and awareness for environment conservation.
On 25th March 2015, Prof. Maya began the session with a lecture on Ecology and Forest. She said that biotic and abiotic component are the integral part of the ecosystem.
Prof. Ranjan Kumar Panda, Associate Professor, Department of Social Sciences, IIT Bombay described various issues related with Environment Ethics. Prof. Ranjan, emphasized that everyone should be aware with the environmental ethics which are as important as social and moral ethics and values. Prof. Ranjan made an appeal to the candidates to inculcate environment values and their ethics among the student to make this earth a better place to live.
On 26th March 2015 session began with the innovative ideas of Prof. K. Narayanan, Head of the Department of Economics on Environment Economics, IIT Bombay. Prof. Narayanan discussed the role of environmental assets and agriculture production for the overall development of the country. Prof. Nikhil also discussed informative lecture on water resource and energy resources, and their importance in society.
On 27th March 2015 session started with a presentation on Food Resources by Prof. Maya. She highlighted various food related problems and their consequences as a result of increasing multifold pollution.
Prof. Harish Phuleria, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Bombay delivered a lecture onWater Pollution with the detailed analysis of the key factors of its causes in the major rivers of India. Prof. Harish also suggested some preventive measures to control water pollution and latest technologies to deal with the issue of water pollution.
The session came to an end with the Valedictory Session chaired by Prof. Deepak B. Phatak who motivated the participants to create awareness and contribute in making this earth green and clean.
Valedictory session ended with the certificate distribution to all the participants.
