QEEE Session On
Electrochemistry and Its Applications
20th, 21st & 22nd March, 2017
QEEE session on Electrochemistry and Its Application was organized by IIT, Madras under D2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT on 20th, 21st & 22nd March 2017. The session was conducted by Dr. R. Kothandaraman, Department of Chemistry, IIT Madras. It was coordinated at DGI, Greater Noida by Local Faculty Coordinator Dr. Vaishali Pravin Raut, Assistant Professor - Applied Science Department. First Year B. Tech. students attended the session.
Day 1: 20th March 2017
Dr. R. Kothandaraman, started the session with the lecture on Electrochemistry and Its Application. He discussed Heterogeneous catalysis, IUPAC convention, Reference Electrode: Standard Hydrogen Electrode, Polarizable and non-polarizable electrode / interfaces. He also explained applications of EMF measurements, Potentiometric titrations, Electrochemical series. The session concluded with students’ queries.
Day2 : 21st March 2017
Dr. R. Kothandaraman, started the session with the lecture on “Corrosion”. He discussed the fundamental electrochemistry of corrosion, Evans diagram and effect of pH. He explained Passivation and its breakdown, Pitting Corrosion, Corrosion Protection, Coatings and Inhibitors and Micropolarization measurements.
Day 3 : 22nd March 2017
Dr. R. Kothandaraman, resumed the session with the lecture on Energy Conversion and Storage. He discussed Batteries and Fuel Cells. He said that the most widely used is the lead - acid battery. Batteries used in modern laptops and other portable electronic devices are based on a rechargeable Li-ion battery and a non - aqueous solvent. The Li-ion rechargeable battery comprises a graphite anode and a rather complex cathode.
The QEEE sessions on Electrochemistry and Its Application - Engineering Chemistry, were very helpful for students as it provided a platform to learn various topics in Electrochemistry which included Reference Electrode: Standard Hydrogen Electrode, Electrode kinetics, Corrosion, Fundamental Electrochemistry of Corrosion, Corrosion Protection, Cathodic Protection, Anodic Protection, Coatings and Inhibitors, Batteries and Fuel Cells, Primary Batteries, Rechargeable and Li-ion battery.
