Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and IP management for Start Up

Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), Ministry of Education (MoE), Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and IP management for Start Up on 18th April, 2024. The workshop was taken by Prof. Sanghamitra V Arora (IIC Convenor) for B.Tech 2nd and 3rd year students.
The workshop began with an introduction to different types of intellectual property rights. Distinctions between patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets were explained to the students. Prof. Arora explained how patents protect inventions, trademarks secure brand identity, copyrights cover original works of authorship, and trade secrets protect confidential business information. Emphasis was placed on the importance of understanding the rights to avoid infringement and to protect one's own creations.
Students were introduced to the concept of IP management, which involves identifying, protecting, and commercializing intellectual property. Prof. Arora discussed strategies for building a robust IP portfolio, including when to file for patents, how to maintain trade secrets, and the importance of conducting thorough IP audits. IP registration process was also explained to the students which included patent drafting, filing procedures and responding to patent office actions.
The workshop also featured case studies of engineering startups that effectively utilized their IP assets to gain a competitive advantage. The examples helped students understand the practical aspects of IP management, including challenges faced and strategies used to overcome them. Students also participated in practical exercises, group discussions, and Q&A sessions.
Objective: To equip students with IP knowledge crucial for protecting and managing startup innovations.
