STP on Preparing Students for Job Interviews Conducted by NITTTR, Chandigarh

National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh conducted a Student Training Program (STP) on Preparing Students for Job Interviews on 12th August 2016 for final year students. The program was organized at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT and was attended by 51 students from Department of Mechanical Engineering, DGI.
The STP was inaugurated by Dr. P. K. Tulsi, Head of the Department of Education and Educational Management, NITTTR, Chandigarh. She stated the objectives of the STP and explained about the Professional Skill and Communication Skill that are required for a job:
Dr. Tulsi said that quality of technical education has to be improved because Professional Skills are based on domain knowledge. Employability Research Data of World Bank Study 2011 & Aspiring Mind Assessment Pvt. Ltd study 2016, were also discussed in detail by her.
Dr. Tulsi then explained Communication Skills and emphasized that many students do not get job due to lack of communication skill inspite of having excellent academic record as well as good knowledge of their domain subject.
Proceeding the session Mr. Sanmeet Sandhu , Thapar University, Patiala and Dr. Sunil Dutt, Professor, NITTTR Chandigarh explained method of making resume effective and shared some format with the participants. He discussed 48 factors which should be kept in mind during the preparation of resume. With the completion of this he handed over the podium to Mr. Ramandeep Singh Sidhu, HR Head, Aerospace. He shared his experience with the students and discussed the expectation of the Industry from the Technical Students.
Next, Dr. Vidhu Mohan, Former Professor of Psychology Department, Punjab University explained Pre and Post Interview Planning. She explained the students how to react, how to sit and how to manage one’s body language while facing interviews.
Dr. Mohan advised that one should never use words which are not relevant to him / her. She gave an exercise to the students to examine them. During her session she shared a presentation that contained the following questions for self-analysis:-
1. Who am I?
2. Interview Phase
3. Appearance
4. Timing
Dr. Mohan gave 10 minutes to the students to think about themselves and write a paragraph on themselves. She then focused on Interview Phases i.e. Pre & Post Interview Phase. Pre Interview impressions can also affect, what the interviewer notices about the interviewee like code of conduct, behavior and appearance of the applicant. One must be well groomed and wear formal dress and be punctual.
Dr. S P Bedi, Professor, NITTTR Chandigarh later gave a brief about Group Discussion.in which she explained the following terms:-
1. What do Panelist Assess in GD (For example ability to work in team, communication and interpersonal skill and reasoning ability etc).
2. Leading a discussion.
3. Sitting Posture in Group Discussion.
4. Dress during Group Discussion.
5. Do’s and Don’ts during the Group Discussion.
6. Nature of Topics for Group Discussion.
Dr. Bedi discussed case studies wherein candidates make mistakes very often.
The last session of the day was query round. Dr. Bedi concluded the session by resolving queries of the students and gave them some valuable points for their success. It was very interactive and knowledgeable session for the students.
