Workshop on
SOLAR PV SYSTEM ENGINERING
28th and 29th September 2018
The Department of ECE & EEE in association with BeGenesis Skills Academy organized a two days' workshop on Solar PV System Engineering for 2nd and 3rd year students on 28thand 29th September 2018.
Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti, Honorable Director, DGI and Prof. B. L. Kaul, Honorable Registrar, DGI welcomed the trainers from BeGenesis Skills Academy: Mr. Pritthish Gupta, Co-founder, Mr. Pawan Kumar, Faculty cum Manager Operations-Training & Skill Development and Mr. Sachchidanand Mishra, Faculty cum Manager Operations - Training & Skill Development.
Prof. Soti in his welcome address said that energy demand per capita is growing at a fast rate and conventional sources of energy are not only depleting day by day but also cause enormous pollution. Prof. Kaul in his address said that it is wise only to explore more about renewable sources of energy, especially solar energy as solar panels take less space and can be commissioned faster when compared to other renewable sources of energy.
Day-1
Mr. Gupta said that over the next two days workshop will cover the following aspects of Solar PV System Engineering:
- Solar Power Plant System Designing
- Solar Power Plant Installation and Commissioning
- Solar Business Development and Entrepreneurship
Mr. Kumar and Mr. Mishra then began with the session on the basics of solar engineering. They explained the principle of working of solar cells, types of solar cells, series and parallel connection of solar modules, construction of solar arrays and panels.
They went onto explain the equivalent circuit of a solar cell and irradiance. They also explained the effect of various factors on the performance of the solar cells. They demonstrated the same by a series of experiments which the participants enjoyed and appreciated.
By the end of the day the participants were able to explain the basics of solar engineering themselves. They could also read various specifications and parameters of a solar panel from its datasheet.
Day-2
The day began with session on other aspects of solar engineering like matching solar array and inverter, system protection, cable sizing etc. The trainers then explained the design calculations for commissioning solar panels at a particular location. They also explained about the factors which must be taken care of in order to utilize the installed solar panels to the maximum potential.
Participants are then taken on a site survey in the DGI campus for assessing the possibility of commissioning solar panels at different locations under the supervision of the trainers. The session concluded with an extensive hands-on session on solar designing software PVsyst and SunDAT.
The participants found the workshop extremely interesting and informative. They were excited to perform various experiments and site survey all by themselves.
Mr. Probeer Sahw, HOD-ECE & EEE thanked all the participants for their enthusiastic participation and the trainers for conducting the workshop successfully.
