Certificate Program in Technical Consultancy
8,9,10 & 13 November, 2017
Four-day Certificate Program in Technical Consultancy, under the aegis of CDC (Autonomous Institution of DSIR, Ministry of Science & Technology) was conducted at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 8,9,10 and 13 Nov, 2017. The total duration of the program was 20 hours. Prof. D.V. Bhise , and Dr. Aditi Paul, Coordinators of DGI-CDC Cell coordinated the training program under the supervision of Prof. TPN Singh, Head, DGI-CDC Cell.
20 students from Final Year B.Tech CSE, ME, CE and ECE / EEE branches participated in the training.
Eminent professionals and practicing consultants from reputed public and private sector having wide experience in consulting domains provided inputs and shared their real life experiences with the participants during the training.

Day-1, 8 Nov, 2017
Day 1 started with the inauguration of the program by the Chief Guest Mr. Dipankar De, Partner –Tangram Advisory Services Pvt Ltd with the Lighting of Lamp and Saraswati Vandana.
Prof. (Dr.) Ashish Soti, Hon’ble Director, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida welcomed the Chief Guest and all the participants and explained the importance of Technical Consultancy Program. He highlighted the benefits of this certification for the students who want to take Consultancy as their career.
The first session was conducted by Mr. Dipankar De, on the topic “Presentation Skill for a Consultant” in which he focused on the aim of conducting such training for the final year students. He stated that Technical Consultancy Program are meant for the people who are in the field of Technical or Management Consultancy and as a student they are the most youngest in this field. The training program is aimed to groom these youngest pupils for various aspects of Consultancy Services. Mr. De explained the consultants are paid to present. Hence presentation skill is the key factor for getting success in this path.
Mr. De described the important features of a good Presentation Skill such as Knowledge, Confidence Level of the presenter, Eye Contact, Posture and Gesture etc. and the three important steps to prepare presentation which are Plan, Prepare & Practice and Present. Mr. De highlighted some important points that should be kept in mind before going for a technical presentation which are, Who are the audience, What could be their questions, What are their needs and How much time is allocated for the presentation. He discussed some tricks to follow in case consultant forgets his presentation in between or does not know the answer of any query from his clients.
The post lunch session was on the topic “Consulting Proposal and Report” in which Mr. De discussed that clients hire external consultants for Identifying and assessing every proposer’s capabilities before their engagement and that results in selection of the right consultant for the problem/issue in hand. He defined proposal as a written offer from a seller to a prospective buyer. He stated that client’s Requirements, Approach and Method, Capability Evidence, Dependability are the essential features of proposals that meets client’s requirements. Mr. De explained the four characteristics of a winning proposal which are Marketing Skills, Analytical Skills, Domain Expertise, Writing and Representational Skills. He continued the session with the major steps of Technical Report Writing which are Defining a Problem, Sampling and Research Instrument(s) Design, Data Collection,Data Analysis and Interpretation of Results.
Day2 - 9 Nov, 2017
Day-2 started with the discussion on Preparation Of Proposals including Costing Consulting Service by Mr. S.C. Gandhi, Director, Rayon Energy. Mr. Gandhi first discussed about Technical Proposal and then he explained how to prepare a technical proposal. He said that proposals can be made in various ways depending on client’s requirements. However, prior information about adequate fund is advisable before preparing any proposal for the client. During his session Mr. Gandhi gave examples of company’s proposals and showed how proposals are important for building large projects.
Mr. Gandhi also discussed various parameters for writing proposal such as Scope Of Supply, Design Basis, Plant Layout, Utility Services, List Of Buildings and Technical Requirement For Civil Works.
The post lunch session was on Project Management and Project Life Cycle by Mr. Gandhi in which he discussed the concept of Project Management and its life cycle. Mr. Gandhi focused on specific EPC project and described various phases of project life cycle such as Thinking Starting/Initiating, Planning, Execution/Construction/Supply, Completion and Handing Over. He also described how a project proposal passes through various Departments like Management, Civil, Mechanical, Planning etc and gets validated in each department with specific data.
Day3-10 Nov, 2017
Mr. Satish Sehta, National Manager-Business Development, Institution of Civil Engineering, UK started with a presentation on Client Interface and Management for Technical Consultant in which he explained Client and Consultant. He advised that maintaining a good relationship with a client makes the time spent on a project -more enjoyable, satisfying and effective Mr. Sehta highlighted the major concerns of Client and Consultant and explained how to work together to understand the client’s concern which is very crucial for a consultant.
The post lunch session was on Contract Management & Construction Management by Mr. Sehta in which he discussed Scope & Project Team, Program Management , Project Management, Construction Management, Processes For Construction Management and Commercial Modalities. Mr. Sehta defined each of the topic in detail and cited examples of live projects and their construction management procedures. The session was very interactive and students put up many queries regarding construction of a new project, its procedure etc.
Day4-13 Nov,2017
A Session on Overview of Technical Consulting was conducted by Mr. S.C. Gandhi, Director, Rayon Energy. Mr. Gandhi defined the Consultancy and its origin. He said that the concept of Consultancy first originated in USA and the first pure management consulting company was Mckinsey & Company. He also named a few Indian consulting companies like Infosys, Oracle, Wipro, HCL Technologies, TCS, Tech Mahindra who are playing a major role in Consultancy Services. He also described the working pattern of consulting companies in India and defined their category.
Mr. Sudhir Dhawan, CEO, Aether Engineering conducted the post lunch session on the topic Marketing of Technical Consultancy Services in which he discussed Pre-Feasibility Study, Feasibility Study, Technical Evaluation and Detailed Project Report. Mr. Dhawan also discussed norms for inviting consultancy proposals with a case study for a proper understanding of the participants. He explained the Risk Analysis Process during the preparation of technical proposal. He later discussed the mode of fees in which he stated that for different scope of the work, fees are quoted in different manner such as Lump Sum, Man per hour etc.
The training program ended with a Test of three hours which was supervised by the CDC representatives on 15 Nov, 2017.
