Celebration of Lohri and Makar Sankranti

NSS Unit, Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida, celebrated Lohri and Makar Sankranti as part of the Yuva Bharat, My Bharat initiative on 13th –14th , January 2025. Faculty members and students actively took part in the festivities. Makar Sankranti symbolizes the beginning of a new phase in life, bringing wisdom, purity, and knowledge. The celebrations provided a platform to appreciate the diverse ways in which these festivals are observed across the country.
The event, organized by the NSS unit, aimed to honor India's rich traditions and foster unity among students. As a land rich in traditions, India observes Lohri and Makar Sankranti as festivals of gratitude and prosperity. These festivals are known by different names across the country—Makar Sankranti in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand; Lohri in Punjab; and Pongal in the southern states.
The celebration commenced with a speech by Prof. (Dr.) Arpita Gupta, Director of DGI, who emphasized the significance of Lohri and Makar Sankranti. She highlighted, Lohri represents the harvest season and a spirit of gratitude, while Makar Sankranti marks the sun’s transition into Capricorn, symbolizing new beginnings and prosperity. The Lohri festivities featured a traditional bonfire, where students gathered to sing folk songs and perform vibrant Bhangra and Gidda dances, fostering a strong sense of unity and joy. Meanwhile, Makar Sankranti was celebrated with kite flying and engaging discussions on its astronomical and cultural importance. To further enhance the festive spirit, traditional sweets like tilgul, rewari, and peanut chikkis were distributed, making the occasion even more delightful and memorable for everyone.
The event not only celebrated India's cultural diversity but also emphasized values such as gratitude, prosperity, and unity. The participation of students from various regions showcased the inclusive spirit of the institution. The celebrations concluded with a vote of thanks by faculty members, encouraging students to cherish their traditions while fostering harmony in society. The festival brought warmth, joy, and a renewed sense of cultural pride among all attendees.
