Exposure Visit to Indian Knowledge Systems Centre (IKS Centre)

The Center for Art and Archaeology, Gurugram

31st March 2023

Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), Ministry of Education (MoE), Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida organized a visit to Indian Knowledge Systems Centre: The Center for Art and Archaeology, Gurugram. 40 students along with Dr. Mamta Bhardwaj (NSS Coordinator) and Dr. Priya Satsangi (IIC member) went to visit IKS Centre.

Indian Knowledge System (IKS) is an innovative cell under Ministry of Education (MoE) at AICTE, New Delhi. The Center for Art & Archaeology (CA&A), a leading archive and library on visual arts & architecture of the Indian subcontinent, deploys its resources to facilitate scholarly research and to provide the broadest possible access to a diverse national and international audience.

CA&A maintains images, maps and plans for more than 7000 monuments and ancient buildings. These resources were primarily created by CA&A professional staff, but also include materials contributed by research scholars. The archives hold photography and papers of leaders in the field including Fredrick and Catherine Asher, Carmel Berkson, Grace Morley and Walter Spink. In addition, the archives house surveys of 350 museum collections in India, commissioned and funded by central and state governments and documented by CA&A staff.

In total, CA&A houses more than 2,00,000 images of Indic art and architecture. Digital images from this collection are available for scholarly publications and an online presence is maintained at the Virtual Museum of Images and Sounds. An extensive collection of images from CA&A collection is also available at Artstor and the Digital South Asia Library.

CA&A also maintains a major research library focusing on art and architecture in the subcontinent. This open-stack facility houses 75,000 books, journals and maps.

In particular, students learned about research areas of digitization and use of VR for virtual representation of historical monuments. Students also understood the tasks by precision measurements, calibration, development of model, processes and other allied problems related to digitization.

Students gained lot of knowledge and information regarding the developments that took place in the field of digitization.
