Workshop on Basics Of Foundry Practice
Under the Aegis of
Centre of Excellence for Smart Manufacturing (CoESM)
(MSME, Govt. of India)
8th - 9th March 2018
A Two Day Workshop on "Basics of Foundry Practice" was organized by Mechanical Engineering Department in collaboration with MSME, Govt. of India on 8th - 9th March 2018 at Centre of Excellence for Smart Manufacturing (CoESM), Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida. The workshop was coordinated by Faculty Member Mr. Brijesh Verma and was attended by 33 students from second year Mechanical Engineering stream. The aim of the workshop was to make participants familiar with foundry practices, understand basic principle and perform casting to manufacture articles.
Day 1, 8th March 2018
On the first day, Mr. Brijesh Verma delivered a lecture on Foundry Practice. He began with the history of castings and covered following topics during his lecture:
- Introduction of casting
- Need of casting
- Steps of casting
- Types of castings
- Sand casting and procedure
- Foundry tools and equipment's
- Casting defects
- Inspection of castings.
Participants were explained the process of sand preparation for making molds. They were informed about appropriate composition of sand, water, clay and molasses. After making molds participants learned the process of pouring molten metal, solidification and removal of castings from the mold.
Day 2, 9th March 2018
On second day the participants prepared their own pattern for making mold cavity. The gas fired furnace was used to melt aluminum metal. After melting, liquid metal was poured into the mold cavity and casting was removed from the sand after solidification.
The workshop proved to be a successful and practical oriented. Participants gained very good knowledge and exposure of Foundry Practice.
