QEEE –D2S Session On
Induction Machines: Theory – Electrical Machines
18th, 21st & 22th September, 2017
QEEE Session on "Induction Machines: Theory – Electrical Machines" was organized by IIT, Madras under D2S (Direct to Student) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida on 18th, 21st & 22th September 2017. The Sessions were conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Bhuvaneshwari G. of IIT Delhi and was locally coordinated by Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Assistant Professor EEE; DGI Greater Noida. Students of EEE 3rd, 5th and 7th Semester attended the session.
Day 1: 18th September 2017
Prof. (Dr.) Bhuvaneshwari G. started her lecture with the description of real-life applications of Induction Motor in industries like paper mill, textile mill, printing machines etc. She explained the type of induction motor and its constructions. She further explained how the cost of Induction motors is determined and then discussed the equivalent circuit diagram of three phase induction motor.
Day 2: 21th September 2017
Prof. Bhuvaneshwari gave a brief review of the topics covered in her previous lecture. She then explained Revolving Magnetic Field Theory and derived the RMF equation. She defined different types of torque, i.e., Starting Torque, Full Load Torque and derived the expression for torque developed in induction motor. Sheexplained the No Load Test and Blocked Rotor Test of 3 phase IM. Relations between Rotor Input Power, Rotor Output Power and Rotor Copper Losses were also covered during the session.
Day 3: 22th September 2017
The third and last session of this QEEE Program started with the description of torque slip characteristics of 3 phase induction motor. She explained the starting method of three phase induction motor as DOL, Direct on Line Starter method, delta – star and auto transformer starting method. She explained the speed control of three phases IM and said voltage/frequency control is the most efficient scheme for speed control of induction motor is by varying supply frequency. Regenerative braking and plugging were also covered during the session.
