Introduction to DBMS - Database Management Systems
25th - 27th September, 2017
QEEE session on “Introduction to DBMS - Database Management Systems” was organized by IIT Madras under Direct to Student (D2S) Program at Dronacharya Group of Institutions, Greater Noida through ICT during 25th - 27th September 2017. The course was conducted by Prof. (Dr.) Pabitra Mitra, Faculty IIT Kharagpur. Dr. Somnath Sinha was the Local Faculty Coordinator for the Course. 35 students from B-Tech (CSE/IT) 5th semester enrolled for the course.
Day 1: 25th September
The session started with the concept of basic DBMS structure. Prof. Pabitra Mitra described the tier architecture of DBMS, Data Models and Data Handling issues. He described E-R data model and its importance with example. Different key concepts in database were also discussed. Prof. Mitra explained the Relational Algebra, Structure Query Language (SQL) and Join Operation in SQL.
Day 2: 26th September
Prof. Pabitra Mitra started the session with a brief recapitulation of the previous class. He then discussed Functional Dependencies, Normalization and Data Base Design process with the removal of multi valued dependency. He described lossless and lossy decomposition process. Later he illustrated storage and file structure where he covered classification of physical storage media and storage hierarchy. He also explained the disk accessibility process and file organization. The second day session ended with the concept of Indexing and Hashing.
Day 2: 27th September
Final day’s session started with the continuation of query processing concept. Prof. Pabitra Mitra explained Transaction Processing, Recovery Technique and Big Data. He briefly explained ACID properties of transaction and different scheduling technique. The session also covered concurrency control and lock based protocol.
The three-day session was very effective for the students as it was syllabus oriented. Overall the session was very obliging as it imparted a conceptual knowledge in DBMS to the participants.
