QEEE SESSION ON
CONSTITUTION OF ALLOYS AND PHASE DIAGRAM
18th, 20th, 22nd SEPT 2017
A Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE) session on “Constitution of Alloys and Phase Diagram” was conducted by Prof. S. K. Panigrahi from IIT Madras. Twenty seven students from II Year from Mechanical Engineering Department were enrolled in the course and was locally coordinated by Mr. Gaurav Siwal. The course was structured within the scope of students, especially for those who were studying material science.
Session 1 (18th Sept 2017)
On the first day Prof. Panigrahi welcomed the participants and introduced them to the course. He discussed the definition of alloy, types of phases, solution of different phases and application of alloys. He also discussed the Unary Phase Diagram of water in which he taught the Gibbs Phase Rule to find out the degree of freedom at particular temperature and pressure. He also explained Binary Phase Diagrams, Development of Binary Phase Diagrams and Lever Rule to find out the composition of phases. The session ended with doubts and queries addressed by Prof. Panigrahi.
Session 2 (20th Sept 2017)
On second day Prof. Panigrahi continued with the quick revision. He discussed the Binary Phase Diagram for Cu and Ni element in which he told participants about different phases, liquidus, solidus and solvus lines. He then discussed the Eutectic Phase Diagram, Peritectic Phase Diagram and Monotectic Phase Diagram. He also discussed the development of Tertiary Phase Diagram and the way to find composition of an alloy in Tertiary Phase Diagram.
Session 3 (22nd Sept 2017)
On third and final day of the session Prof. Panigrahi discussed the Iron Carbon Phase Diagram. He explained the phases in Fe-Fe3C Diagram, invariant reactions like Eutectic, Eutectoid and Peritectic Reaction and microstructure at various compositions. He also discussed TTT (Temperature, Time and Transformation) and CCT (Continuous Cooling Transformation) diagrams. The program came to an end at 04:15 PM with the fruitful discussions on Constitution of alloys.
Keeping in mind the benefits of the students, one proctored quiz and an assignment was given to the students, which is to be submitted by the students through their QEEE account by 21st October, 2017.
